What people do on the internet?

People usually spend time on the internet for following reasons -

Search Information
For example, a Ph.D Student wants to find information for his/her thesis.
Search Media
For example, a teenage boy wants to watch funny videos on youtube/daily motion etc.
Search Software
For example, a software developer wants an open source application to make his/her life easy.
Search Files
For example, a free e-book collector wants to find special book he/she is always looking for.
Search Trade leads
For example, a savvy entrepreneur wants to find trade leads for exporting his/her product.
Search Business information (Directory)
For example, a sales executive wants to contact sales department of vendor company.
Emailing
For example, any individual wants to start email conversation with other person.
Chatting
For example, parents in India wants to text chat to their 22 year girl in New york.
Share information with friends by any means
For example, Guy like me blogging or twitting my thoughts.

The ways to find information other than internet (especially in India) are -

Phone Call - In India people rely on each others opinion. Also factors like seniority, prior experience, age etc of a adviser are more important while making their own decision. If I want a insurance agent I will call my friends & ask to refer one.
Face-to-Face Meeting - Personally I believe this is the best way to close any deal (call me old fashioned :) )
SMS (Texting) - All teenagers (Like in India, I saw in Europe & USA too) are die hard fans of texting. They use it as micro blogging tool, forums, instant messaging etc. I guess it's the cheapest & easiest way too.

In India new generation is more inclined to use internet to find what they are looking for. Otherwise the non internet means are more popular to fetch the help. I always go for internet first & then ask friends in my contact list through emails.

We will see if we can combine both (internet/non internet) ways of communication into Butterfly project - at some point.
